In Praise of Recognition

Recognition is one of the most powerful, proven tools for increasing motivation, morale, and retention. In fact, employees who receive regular recognition are four times more likely to be engaged and five times more likely to see a future with their company (Gallup, 2023).

Recognition builds trust, strengthens culture, and supports performance. It’s not just a nice gesture — it’s a strategic lever for better results.

But like any tool, it works best when used well.

Three Ways to Recognise Someone Effectively

  1. Do it immediately
Recognition has the greatest impact when it's timely. Don’t wait for a performance review — say it when you see it.

  2. Be specific
General praise like “Great job” is forgettable. Point out exactly what the person did and why it mattered.

  3. Make it personal
Highlight the skill, strength, or quality you saw in action. The more personal it is, the more meaningful it becomes.

A moment of genuine recognition can shift how someone feels about their role, their team, and their future in your organisation.

Reflection Questions

  • Do you know how your team members like to be recognised — in private, in public, or something else?

  • Are you recognising effort, learning, and improvement — or only outcomes?

  • How consistent is your recognition, and who might be getting overlooked?
